Lester Black

This is a photo taken in 1897 in Redfield, South Dakota by Lester Woodford Black (1866-1963), a son of William Black, a brother of James Black, my great-great grandfather.  Lester was born in Washington, CT.  After his mother died, his father, William, who was born in Ireland, went West with his five children. The family settled in Redfield, South Dakota, in the 1880s. Lester became a carpenter, but had many hobbies, including music and photography.  His photographs are collected by the South Dakota Historical Society, which recently posted them on its website. He never married but from the photographs seems to have been very involved with his family and friends. He also traveled, with his camera, from California to Connecticut, and all around South Dakota. He died at 97.
