My great grandfather George Henry Gould (1849-1940) was Treasurer of the Fifth Ward Savings Bank in Jersey City, NJ. Born in Fairfield, CT, he moved to Redding, CT, after his father Daniel Banks Gould died when George was around nine-years-old. He and his mother, Julia Burr, lived with his grandparents. His grandfather Bradley Burr was a mail carrier who also owned an inn in Redding (stay tuned for more on him). In Redding, George met his wife Selina Elida Treadwell, a daughter of Aaron Treadwell. They married in 1873. By 1880, George was living at 720 Avenue C in Bayonne NJ.
He and others helped to organize the Fifth Ward Savings Bank in nearby Jersey City, where he continued to work as Treasurer until he was 90-yrs-old. He and Lina raised six children. Their three daughters all graduated from college, one from Syracuse University and two from Smith College, in the early 1900s, way ahead of their times!
