Captain John Burr

Colonial ShipWhat little I know of my fourth great grandfather Captain John Burr makes me curious to learn more.  He lived from 1767 to 1804 in Fairfield, CT.  Burr went to sea at an early age and was captain of his own ship by the age of 21.  In 1804, he was captain of a brig called Rising Sun.  It was not seaworthy but he was somehow indebted to the owners and sailed it anyway.  The ship was lost in Sulawesi Tengha (now Central Sulawesi), Indonesia, and he died at the age of 37.   I’ve tried to locate the Rising Sun and discovered it was a common name for ships at the time.  It could have been part of the China Trade, as this article (which includes a ship of the same name) describes, which had recently opened up to colonial ships. Burr left behind five young children, including Bradley Burr, my third great grandfather, for his wife Abigail (Davis) Burr to raise.
