Elnathan Mitchell Black

Elnathan Mitchell Black Pictured with his team of oxen, my great grandfather Elnathan Mitchell Black was born on Mar. 1, 1858 in Washington, CT.  He was the son of James (1823-1901) and Mary (MacNally) Black (1820-1901), who emigrated from Sligo, Ireland through Canada during the Irish Potato Famine in the early 1840s.  Elnathan’s parents married in Montreal, Canada, on April 4, 1845 and settled in Washington CT. Elnathan married Hattie Woodruff (1868-1956), and worked and raised his five children on Birch Farm, a dairy farm on Northfield Road, Watertown, CT, where my grandmother Mabel Grace Black (Gould) was born in 1893.  Nicknamed “Nate,” he died in 1929.
